Pediatric Basic Life Support Algorithm

The Pediatric Basic Life Support (BLS) algorithm provides a clear, structured step-by-step approach to manage critical emergencies in young patients—infants under one year and children up to puberty. It emphasizes rapid assessment, immediate chest compressions, effective rescue breaths, and timely use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), giving every child a possible chance in an emergency.

Step-by-Step Analysis of the Flowchart

  1. Assess the Situation
Keep an eye on the baby/child’s respiration and gently see if they react. Use an AED if they don’t appear responsive. Call 911.
  2. Check for Pulse
Feel pulse for 10 seconds. Give 1 breath/3 seconds. If weak pulse, start compressions. If no pulse, start cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) (30:2 compression: breath ratio solo, 15:2 with help).
  3. Use the AED When Available
Activate the AED quickly. You can use it as per the displayed directions to analyze the heart rhythm.
  4. Respond as per Rhythm Type
Deliver the AED and continue CPR for 2 minutes if shock is displayed. If not, start CPR and check the rhythm at regular intervals.
  5. Key Points for Effective CPR

    • Push hard and fast (at least 100 compressions per minute).
    • Compress the chest one-third of its depth.
    • Minimize the duration of interruptions.
    • Limit too many breaths.
    • Make sure breaths cause the chest to rise.

Highlights of the Pediatric BLS Algorithm

  1. Automated External Defibrillator (AED)
A portable life-saving device in the event of unexpected cardiac arrest, restores a regular heartbeat.
  2. Pulse
The rhythmic beat you feel when blood is pushed through your arteries by the heart.
  3. Beats Per Minute (BPM)
A measure of how many times the heart beats in one minute. It is felt as a pulse on the wrist and neck.
  4. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
A Technique that combines chest compressions with rescue breaths to circulate blood when the heart stops.
  5. Shockable Rhythms
These are certain irregular and dangerous heart rhythms that can be treated with an electric shock from an AED.
