Step-by-Step Analysis of the Flowchart

Assess Responsiveness
Tap and shout to check if the person responds. If unresponsive, prepare for emergency care.
Call for Help
Call 911 immediately and send someone to get an automated external defibrillator (AED) if available.
Check Breathing and Pulse
Look for chest movement and feel for a pulse for no more than 10 seconds. If absent, start cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) right away.
Chest Compressions
Push hard and fast in the center of the chest—100–120 compressions per minute, 2 inches deep, allowing full recoil.
Rescue Breaths
After 30 compressions, give 2 breaths using the head-tilt, chin-lift method, ensuring chest rise.
Use an AED
Turn on the AED, apply pads, and follow voice prompts. Deliver a shock if advised, then resume CPR immediately.
Continue CPR
Keep doing 30:2 cycles of CPR until EMS arrives, the person shows signs of life, or you’re unable to continue safely.
