Chapter 6: Adult CPR—Put It Together

Now that you’ve gone through the steps of the C-A-B method—Compressions, Airway, and Breathing—it’s time to see how everything fits together. In the Online CPR/AED Course, you’ll practice putting it all into action during an emergency.

Here’s how to perform Adult CPR step-by-step:

• Make sure the scene is safe and put on personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Tap the person and shout, “Are you okay?” to check for a response
• Call out for help.
• Dial 9-1-1 and send someone to get an AED.
• Check for a pulse—but don’t take longer than 10 seconds.
• If there’s no pulse, begin 30 chest compressions (push down 2 to 2.4 inches deep).
• Open the airway using the head-tilt, chin-lift method.
• Give 2 breaths, each lasting 1 second.
• Keep repeating the cycle of 30 compressions and 2 breaths at 100 to 120 compressions per minute until emergency help arrives.
