Chapter 1: CPR – Introduction

This Online CPR/AED and First Aid Course follows the most up-to-date 2021 guidelines from the Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC) program. It also includes special interim updates for situations involving patients who are either suspected or confirmed to have COVID-19.

These additional precautions were developed to better protect healthcare providers, who are often at high risk of exposure. You’ll see this interim guidance noted throughout the course where applicable.

Why CPR Matters

Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is one of the leading causes of adult death in the United States. When someone experiences SCA, their heart suddenly stops beating. Without immediate help, the outcome is often fatal.

That’s where Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) comes in.

CPR is a life-saving combination of chest compressions and rescue breaths. When performed quickly, it keeps oxygen and blood flowing to the brain and heart. Starting CPR within the first 3 to 5 minutes after collapse can make all the difference as it greatly improves survival rates and reduces the risk of permanent damage.
