Chapter 11: Choking – Adult and Child

If an adult or child is choking, they might show it by using the universal choking sign—grasping their neck with one or both hands. This is a key indicator that they need immediate help. Here’s what to do:

  • Ask, “Are you choking?”
  • If the person nods or is unable to speak or breathe, let them know you are trained in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and you’re going to help.
  • Stand or kneel behind the person.
  • Make a fist with one hand and place it just above their belly button.
  • Grasp your fist with your other hand and deliver quick, upward abdominal thrusts.
  • Keep going until the object is forced out and the person can breathe or cough effectively—or until they become unresponsive.
  • For individuals who are pregnant or too large for abdominal thrusts, perform chest thrusts instead.
  • If the person becomes unresponsive at any point, begin CPR immediately using the steps for adult or child CPR.

This chapter is part of your Online CPR/AED Course, helping you feel more prepared to handle choking situations when every second counts.
